“Clark Canyon,” 2008, 24in. x 30in., oil on canvas
Former urbanite Phyllis Shafer now seems most at home when she is among the trees and valleys of California and Nevada. The contemporary landscape painter notes, “I don’t just paint in a realistic style. Instead, it’s a marriage between observation and fantasy coming from a felt response to the landscape.” When at work, she spends 90 percent of the time painting in the area she is depicting, before finishing each piece in her studio. Shafer is also an art instructor at Lake Tahoe Community College in California. She was featured in the December 2007 issue of AmericanStyle.
